Creating boost shortcuts

MemoryBoost can create special shortcuts for you that boost your computer's memory before a program is run. They work just like normal Windows shortcuts; you can copy them around, double-click them to run your programs, and they look just like the shortcuts for your programs. You can use them to ensure that your programs run quickly and smoothly. If you have a program that needs a lot of memory, you can create a boost shortcut for it that clears out the memory it needs. Every time you use that boost shortcut, MemoryBoost will run and clear out the appropriate memory before the program starts.

You can create a boost shortcut using the items in the "Create boost shortcut" box. First, you need to enter the file name of the program; you can use the Browse button to search your hard drive for it. Next, you need to choose an amount of memory to free for this program. You can use the Detective window while the program is running to find out how much memory it uses. Finally, you need to select a location for the boost shortcut. MemoryBoost can put it either on your desktop or in your Start menu. When you're ready, simply click the "Create the shortcut" button and your new boost shortcut will appear.

Avoiding programs

As mentioned in other sections, MemoryBoost tries hard not to interfere with your programs. It checks your CPU usage to make sure your computer is idle before working, and it will only boost when your memory becomes very low if you are using your computer. However, sometimes you really want a guarantee that MemoryBoost won't do anything while a program is running. Maybe you have a huge game that takes up your entire computer, that may even pull memory below the minimum amount, and you don't want MemoryBoost to step in because you trust the game to manage your computer's memory. In this case, you can use the "Avoided programs" box to inform MemoryBoost not to interfere with your game. Hit the "Add" button the add the program to the list; the "Edit" and "Remove" buttons let you edit existing entries and remove them, respectively.

MemoryBoost identifies programs by their window titles (not by their file names). When you enter a program in the Avoided programs list, you want to make sure you enter its title (or part of its title) correctly.

Generally speaking, it is not necessary to use the Avoided programs list. MemoryBoost is very effective in avoiding programs on its own. You should only use this feature if one of your programs hogs memory, and for some reason you want to allow it to do so.
